Orthodontic Retention

orthodontic retention

Getting your smile looking great takes a lot of work on your part. The last thing you want to do is let your teeth shift back to the way they were. That is why the retention phase is so important.

Once your braces are off, if you want to keep your smile looking great, you will need to wear retainers. There are three types of retainers we offer:

  • Traditional removable retainers, where wire surrounds the teeth and attaches to an acrylic arch in the roof of the mouth.
  • Aligner-style retainers, which look like Invisalign but are shaped to hold the teeth in place, not move them.
  • Fixed retainers, which are bonded to the teeth.

Each type has its pros and cons. For example, removable retainers can be taken out when eating, but they can also be lost. Fixed retainers mean not keeping track of another appliance, but your diet remains restricted like with braces. Ultimately, it is between you and the doctor to determine which is right for you.
